Jefferson Starship (USA)
Is Legendary band from 60's Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1965. A pioneer of the psychedelic rock movement, Jefferson Airplane was the first band from the San Francisco scene to achieve mainstream commercial and critical success. The band performed at the three most famous American rock festivals of the 1960s—Monterey (1967), Woodstock (1969) and Altamont (1969)—as well as headlining the first Isle of Wight Festival. Their recordings were internationally successful, and they scored two US Top 10 hit singles and a string of Top 20 albums. Their 1967 record Surrealistic Pillow is regarded as one of the key recordings of the so-called Summer of Love and brought the group international recognition. Two chart hits from the album, "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit", are listed in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Successor bands to Jefferson Airplane include Jefferson Starship and Starship; spinoffs include Hot Tuna and KBC Band. Jefferson Airplane was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
Jefferson Starship is an American rock band formed in the early 1970s by several members of the former psychedelic rock group Jefferson Airplane. The band has undergone several major changes in personnel and genres through the years while retaining the same Jefferson Starship name. The current Jefferson Starship, led by co-founder Paul Kantner, more closely resembles its original mix of psychedelic and electric folk music than the pop-driven tunes it was widely known for in the early to mid-1980s. It is not to be confused with Starship, a spin-off of the group featuring former co-lead singer Mickey Thomas that also periodically tours. The latter group is most frequently identified with the 1980s pop tunes of the Jefferson Starship. During the transitional period of the early 1970s, when Jefferson Airplane was in the process of disbanding, singer-guitarist Paul Kantner recordedBlows Against the Empire. This was a concept album featuring an ad hoc group of musicians (centered around Kantner, Grace Slick, Joey Covington, and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane; Crosby & Nash; and members of the Grateful Dead & Santana) credited on the LP as "Jefferson Starship", marking the first use of that name. This agglomeration was informally known as the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra, a moniker later used on a Kantner album in the early 1980s.
In Blows Against the Empire, Kantner and Slick sang about a group of people escaping Earth in a hijacked starship. In 1971, the album was nominated for the prestigious science fiction prize, the Hugo Award, a rare honor for a musical recording. Rolling Stone calls it "a sci-fi song suite that now suffers from concept-album creakiness but at its time boasted an experimental edge". It was while that album was being made that Kantner sealed his love affair with Grace Slick; their daughter China Kantner (who made a name for herself as an MTV veejay in the 1980s) was born shortly thereafter.
Kantner and Slick with the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra released two follow-up albums: Sunfighter, an environmentalism-tinged album released in 1971 to celebrate China's birth, and 1973's Baron von Tollbooth & The Chrome Nun, titled after the nicknames David Crosby had given to the couple. Bassist/keyboardist/vocalist David Freiberg was given equal billing alongside Kantner and Slick on the latter album. A founding member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, Freiberg had known and played with Kantner on the folk circuit in the early 1960s and sang background vocals on Blows Against the Empire. Following a marijuana arrest that resulted in his departure from Quicksilver in 1971, he joined Jefferson Airplane as a vocalist for their final tour, documented on the live Thirty Seconds Over Winterland (1973).
Early in 1974, Slick released Manhole, her first solo album. It was on the Manhole album that Kantner and Slick next worked with Pete Sears (who had first played on Papa John Creach's firstsolo album), who was co-producing a Kathi McDonald album in the same studio. Sears wrote and recorded the song, "Better Lying Down" with Slick, and played bass on the song "Epic #38". It was during this session at Wally Heider studios in San Francisco, that Paul first asked Pete to play with a new band he was forming that was later christened Jefferson Starship. Sears had worked on three of Rod Stewart's early British recordings, and had to go back to England to play on Smiler, Stewart's last album made in London, so Jorma Kaukonen's brother Peter Kaukonen first played with the band early in 1974 before Sears returned to the States and replaced him in Jefferson Starship in June 1974. Kantner is credited with discovering teenage guitarist Craig Chaquico during this time, who first appeared on Sunfighter and played with Kantner, Slick and their bands and then with Starship through 1990. He later embarked on a successful solo career as a smooth jazz artist.
In the early 1990s three young musicians in Düsseldorf decided that psychedelic rock should not have died - what followed was a merciless assault on eardrums and nerves but also the birth of Vibravoid. Influenced by the psychedelic and garage rock revival of the 1980s and the bands
of the late 1960s, the band quickly found their own sound, which to this day is generously free from short-term trends and established the band as the European flagship of the genre. Vibravoid are pure and unaffected by outside influences in their own amniotic sac - undoubtedly dated 1967. The band manages to authentically keep the spirit of a bygone era, without sounding stale or out of date and thus far have themselves become trendsetters. Since their debut album "2001", which in 2000 struck like a bombshell into the international psych scene and was also published in 2005 in Japan, the band internationally released more than 7 studio albums, 2 live albums and countless EPs - where the band enjoys a reputation as one of the best representatives of the new Krautrock. Vibravoid always set on vinyl, which reflects not only real awareness of style but also of foresight -considering the vinyl market today! The EPs "Krautrock Sensation" and "What Colour Is Pink?"(both Fruits De Mer Records, UK, 2009/2010) met with press and public on euphoric resonances and are now traded on ebay for astronomical sums. 2008 the band produced with the inventor of the Flower Power, Sky Saxon (The Seeds), the album "A Poetry of Love" and thus the last legacy of one of the greatest legends in rock history. The album "Gravity Zero"(2012) earned global leadership positions in many charts of the year, rave reviews and sold before publication alone more than 3000 times by pre-orders!
Late 2012 the band launched their own label: Stoned Karma Records opened a new chapter in the band's history and hit stunning success with the 2CD re-release of "The Politics Of Ecstasy" (2008)! The new studio album "Delirio Dei Sensi" willbe released March 2013. Recorded and produced during the last tour of Italy in the fall of 2012, the disc contains many new songs and highlights of the classic psychedelic rock like Aphrodite's Child "Magic Mirror", Tyrnaround "Colour Your Mind"or the amazing surprise of "Poupée De Cire" by France Gall!
Electric Stars (UK)
Electric Stars coming from Manchester, England with musical reference points that stretch from the 60's era to the present day, but floating comfortably around the late 60's early 70's, but also very much in the now, this is, as the band so eloquently put it, "Beautiful music for beautiful people!"
The Electric Stars have chosen the perfect title for this album with "Sonic Candy Soul" there is power, sweetness and plenty of soul in every track. If you could imagine a supergroup created from The Small Faces, T-Rex, Bowie, Stones, early Pink Floyd, New York Dolls, only better, then that is exactly what you have here in this band, this is, without any doubt, one of the best releases this year, if not the best!
Their debut album Sonic Candy Soul is a musical selection box crammed full of mouthwateringly tempting treats. As well as both tracks off their double A-sided debut single, I Want You and Stoned Again, there are nine other goodies, each one a winner in its own right.
Sean Yox & The Streamers (USA)
Sean Yox and The Streamers coming from New York City,
They make a good bridge between the New York garage punk of the '70s/'80s and the hip garage band scene of today. Rocking out with all the abandon of the rock personalities of yesterday but frequently holding to the idealism and optimism of today's left leaning bands, The Streamers have an infectious enthusiastic approach to music that will have even the most cynical dancing around the room.
